FAQ
Why have I been referred?
Your dental needs are beyond the scope of a general practice. This referral is indicative of the care your dentist has for you to receive the highest quality of dental care for your complex needs.
What is a prosthodontist?
A prosthodontist is a specialist in reconstructive and cosmetic dentistry. Dr. Varma has completed a two-year residency recognized by the American Dental Association to treat complex dental needs and to provide state-of-the-art cosmetic procedures.
Can I make an appointment without being referred?
Yes. We can treat your complex dental needs and refer you to a general dentist if needed.
How long will my treatment take?
Treatment times vary depending on the procedure. Our goal is to provide you with the highest standards to ensure an excellent long-term result.
What can I expect at my first appointment?
Your first visit with Dr. Varma or Dr. Steffen will involve a comprehensive examination, which may include radiographs and impressions. We are primarily interested in your specific dental concerns and how we can help you achieve your treatment goals. Any emergent needs will be treated immediately but generally we will schedule a consultation with you to discuss your comprehensive treatment options in detail.
What is an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon?
The specialty of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery requires a minimum of 4 years of post dental school education in a hospital setting. It is there that as a resident, the doctor learns to treat and manage a wide range of problems dealing with the oral cavity and associated structures. This includes such things as dental implants, wisdom teeth removal, corrective jaw surgery, treatment of oral cancer, facial injuries, facial pain and disorders of the TMJ.
In addition, the doctor is trained in the department of anesthesia to administer all forms of general and regional anesthesia. This allows the doctor to provide a variety of options regarding pain and anxiety control during the surgical phase of a patient’s treatment.
What are my anesthetic choices when I’m going to have surgery?
Our doctors are trained to utilize a variety of anesthetic techniques and will work with you to decide what is best for your individual needs. Dr. Steffen and Dr. Hinz are board certified by the American Society of Dental Anesthesia. A pre-surgical consultation is performed to evaluate the patient’s overall health. The doctor will consult with other physicians as necessary as to medical conditions that will affect anesthetic outcomes. Our office provides, in addition to various local anesthetics, such choices as nitrous oxide, oral sedation, IV conscious sedation and IV general anesthesia. We have a board certified anesthesiologist in our office as well. Our entire staff is ACLS certified as well as certified in assisting with IV anesthetics at our state of the art office setting. Patients are continuously monitored during and after surgery.
What about infection control?
Our office is up to date in regards to the requirements recommended by the Center of Disease Control (CDC), the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), the Washington Safety and Industry Health Act (WISHA, and the American Dental Association (ADA) as they pertain to dental offices. Our staff is committed to maintain sterilization standards that serve to protect our patients and our employees.
